Butterbox Babies: The Stolen Babies Of Nova Scotia BABY FARMERS
The Butterbox Babies refers to a dark chapter in Canadian history involving the Ideal Maternity Home in East Chester, Nova Scotia. Run by William and Lila Young in the 1920s to 1940s, it presented itself as a sanctuary for unwed mothers. However, behind closed doors, the Youngs operated a black-market adoption scheme, selling babies born at the home to willing adoptive parents. These infants often suffered neglect and mistreatment, with some being buried in small wooden butter boxes on the property. The truth about this exploitation and abuse came to light in the 1980s, leading to public outrage and efforts to memorialize the infants, making it a haunting reminder of past injustices.
